Fall will be a busy time for community
September will be a busy time in La Salle. Kicking things off will be the Fall into Fun festival which will be held Fri., Sept. 7 and Sat., Sept. 8 at the La Salle Community Centre.
The event has taken place every year since the fall of 2008. The first day of the festival will begin at 6:30 p.m. with a barbecue, followed by a family movie and fireworks.
Daytime events will be held from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. on the festival’s second day. The morning will get underway with a pancake breakfast from 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. Face painting, giant bouncers, games of skill, a climbing wall and Mr. Ken’s Musical Magic Show are some of the many events that will take place. Games of skill and carnival games will be in the spirit of this year’s Olympic Games in London. Volunteers will be keeping true to this theme by wearing their best Canadian attire.
Following the daytime events, a festival social will be held Saturday night at the La Salle Community Centre. This year, a Red Solo Cup Country Hoedown will be held from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. Individuals must be 18 or older to attend, and tickets are $10 per person. They are available for purchase at Jeni’s Food and Hardware on Main Street. A live band, DJ and silent auction will be part of the evening event. Prizes will be given to the best male and female country outfits.
All the proceeds collected at the Fall Festival will go towards the community centre.
Following the festival, a fall supper will take place on Sun., Sept. 16 at the community centre from 3 to 7 p.m. Tickets will be available at the door. Children five and under will be admitted free. Admission for youngsters between the ages of six and 10 will be $6 while individuals 11 and up will have to pay $12. Proceeds will be divided between the community centre and St. Hyacinthe Catholic Church.
This will be the 27th year for the fall supper at the community centre. It was previously held at the school and in the town old hall. Weeks go into the preparation of the fall supper, and it couldn’t be done without the organizing committee and many volunteers. More than 300 volunteers help out in order to ensure the fall supper is a success. The organizing committee consists of the four members: Lynne Elke, Annette Dion, Norma Wiens and Lorraine Murphy.
The four of them instituted the committee three years ago, and share the tasks and responsibilities.
The fall supper is served buffet style and the menu will consist of turkey, meatballs, mashed potatoes, stuffing, peas, carrots, gravy, pies and cakes. There is also wine available while people wait to be seated. Volunteers have made more than 200 homemade pies and cakes, 60 turkeys, 150 pounds of meatballs, 250 pounds of carrots and 357 pounds of potatoes. The fall supper enjoyed its most successful year in 2007 when 1,230 people were served.
