The month of March is here and spring is in the air. Students are all looking forward to spring break, which is from March 24 until April 1.

Most students are looking forwards to not having to do any work, but 15 youth from La Salle are giving up their spring break to take on a challenge. They will be going to Winnipeg’s inner city as part of SOAR Heartland.

Led by four youth leaders from the La Salle Community Fellowship church, they will be going to the heart of Winnipeg to reach out to young kids who are in need of some kindness and empathy.

The cost for each person to attend SOAR Heartland is normally $400. Thanks to a generous donor from the church who contributed $100 to each participant (for a total of $1,500), and a successful fundraising lunch during which the fundraising goal was exceeded, each individual attending SOAR Heartland this spring break only has to pay $125.

Still on the topic of spring, there will be a spring tea at the La Salle Community Fellowship Church next month. It will take place April 7 from 1 to 3 p.m. and is free of charge.

Even though it is called the spring tea, it is about more than just drinking tea. There will also be dainties, a fashion show, a bake table and a craft table. There will also be a collection basket at the door for those who would like to contribute some of their money to support the Girl Guides of Manitoba.

Everybody is welcome to attend the tea, so travel on down to eat some delicious dainties and meet some new people.

 If you are the parent, step-parent or care-giver of a kid aged 11 to 18 years, you may be interested in learning more about a parenting teenager’s course. The course is meant to help parents through the hardships of parenting teens.

A total of five sessions will be offered Saturday evenings on Feb. 25 and March 3, 10, 17 and 25 from 7 until 9:30 p.m. at the La Salle Community Fellowship church. The cost is $10 per session.

Anyone interested in attending should contact the church (736-3200) so that enough food can be made for everyone.

The course was created by Nicky and Sila Lee, a couple from London, England, and is being taught by Ray Klassen.

Each meeting starts off with a meal, and then proceeds to go into the parenting course, during which participants watch a DVD and then take part in round table discussion.

Following dessert, those attending watch the rest of the DVD and then have more discussions.
"I think that it will make a difference," said one recent participant. "Because everything you learn in life will make a difference somehow."
