Summer is the time to enjoy socializing outdoors

  • Print

We’ve waited for months for this great weather to finally arrive. Now it’s time to take advantage of it.

In my opinion, there really is no bad time of the year to have a party, but summer is especially good. The weather is better and people tend to be in a good mood. It’s unlikely that bad road conditions will keep guests away.

Among the best of reasons for having a summer party is the fact you can have it out on the deck or in the yard – no need to have people all over your house. You can fit more people in the yard, and get them to bring their own chairs, too. What could be easier?  Outdoor parties tend to be a little more on the casual side so you can forgo the fancy china in favour of the Royal Chinet, making cleanup a breeze.

You can get fancy if you want with paper lanterns hanging from trees, candles, and strategically placed flower pots – you can just move them around from other areas of your yard.
Of course, there are mosquitoes to contend with, but a few citronella lanterns and a big fan have been helpful for us. A bonfire is sometimes all you need, but keep the repellent handy, just in case.

So, are we ever obligated to host a party? I don’t think anyone should really have to feel obligated. There seem to be some people who just find the whole thing stressful.

The way I see it, we can’t all avoid it — and thankfully there are many folks who don’t want to. That being said, there should be someone in every family or group of friends who is willing to take the lead. You might find that if you get the ball rolling a time or two, others might volunteer. Sometimes they just need someone to set an example.

Many a happy host has helped to make family memories for generations. Without these people making the effort to host the occasional family barbecue, how would we know what briquettes were? Such gatherings are a great way to get together with all the generations and enjoy time together as a family.

Summer parties are also great for friends. Simple cocktails on the deck or a wiener roast over the bonfire are super-easy ways to host.

Whether you are hosting family or friends, you are spending quality time with people who matter. Don’t let another year of potential good times and memories pass you by.
