Blazer hoping to help sponsor a young player
A Canterbury Park resident is looking to share her love of hockey.
Grade 10 student Kati Tabin, who attends Balmoral Hall, started up the Give Back 2 Play initiative in the fall as part of a school-mandated area of interaction project she must complete as part of her education.
Tabin’s goal is to raise $1,000 to help cover one season’s costs for a player, including registration, ice costs, tournament fees, and pictures. Tabin said she had raised over $800 as of press time.
"I’m fortunate enough to be able to afford to play hockey at a high level," she said. "I just wanted to help people out, so I tried thinking of something that I could do to help someone."
Tabin is also accepting gently-used hockey equipment to help outfit some lucky youngsters as well, saying she’s approached "friends, family, teachers at school, hockey moms, coaches, and some businesses" for donations, noting Royal Sports has donated two prizes. Each donor will be entered into a draw for the prizes when she hits the goal.
Tabin will donate the equipment to Hockey Winnipeg, who will dole it out as needed, while Tabin said either she or the organization will manage the money.
"(The player) won’t have to worry about anything," she said. "It’ll all be covered."
Tabin hopes to keep the project going as an annual campaign.
"I want to do it every year, if I can, after the hockey season’s over," she said, noting running everything has been easier once she established the organization. "It’s going to a good cause, so why not?
"I’m trying to get my team more involved with me so it’s more than a one-person thing."
Tabin, a defender who plays for the Blazers’ prep team, recently attended Hockey Manitoba’s under-18 Program of Excellence Top 40 camp as she looks to crack Manitoba’s entry to the National Women’s Under-18 Championships this November.
Tabin had two goals and eight assists in 28 games for the Blazers en route to being named a Junior Women’s Hockey League all-star this past season.
