While Transcona residents celebrate the community’s first century of existence, the beginning of the next 100 years was recently acknowledged.

On May 25, Peter Martin and Reta Heintz of the Transcona Centennial Committee presented Laurelle Shaw with gifts to acknowledge the birth of her daughter Brooke Young, who was the first Transcona baby born in the community’s second century.

The gifts included a centennial pin, a roll of 2012 pennies, and a quilt made by Anne Warga.

Transcona’s centennial was officially celebrated during a ceremony on April 12 outside the Transcona Legion. Baby Brooke was born on April 13, the first day of the next century.

The presentation was made at Park Manor Personal Care Home with 101-year-old Transcona resident Nan Valentine, who received flowers for the occasion.

"We though it would be nice to have the oldest and youngest Transconians come together," Heintz said.

Shaw said it was an honour to have her daughter recognized by the committee.

"It’s exciting, I didn’t expect it. We just moved back to Transcona and this is what happened," she said.

Valentine said it was great to share the moment with Young, who is one of the many youth who represent the neighbourhood’s future.

"She’s very special. It’s sort of nice to share this with her," Valentine said.

Martin, who also makes regular appearances as Hi Neighbour Sam in the neighbourhood, said it’s important to recognize both the past and future of the community.

"(Valentine is) Transcona’s big sister, she was born the year before Transcona became a town," Martin said.

"We thought it would be special to acknowledge the next 100 years."
