Celebrating Transcona’s centennial
As MLA for Radisson, I would like to congratulate a significant part of our community, Transcona, in honour of its centennial celebrations, which took place over the course of last year and this year.
Nestled away at the eastern edge of Winnipeg, Transcona has always stood out from its neighbours. Founded in 1912, on the site of the Grand Trunk Pacific and National Transcontinental Railways’ repair, Transcona has spread its influence. One hundred years later, the Transcona Historical Museum has released an excellent book documenting this history called Transcona’s Story – 100 Years. From the shop yard to the schoolyard to the football field, its people have been defined by hard work, perseverance and a close sense of community spirit.
Centennial celebrations recently concluded with the grand opening of the Transcona Centennial Square, held on Sept. 9. Our government has provided nearly 20% of the overall funding for this project. This event is the first of many — the square will host an estimated 100,000 guests and visitors annually. Another tribute to the strong spirit of the community, the square will provide social and economic benefits such as a year-round site for community functions, green space, and adds aesthetic value to attract customers to local business.
One hundred years is no small achievement, and throwing a party to match takes the work of dozens of dedicated volunteers, local dignitaries, businesses and organizations. The centennial celebrations would not have been possible without the help of the many devoted volunteers, particularly the members of the Transcona Centennial Committee. They all worked very hard to ensure that the planning and events ran smoothly. A special thanks goes out to Peter Martin, president of the Transcona Playground Renewal Association and his team.
