A North Kildonan dance teacher is bringing the rhythm to Elmwood.
Eliane Neufeld, who is taking the Royal Winnipeg Ballet’s Teacher Training program, was hired by the Mennonite Central Committee of Canada as a summer intern at the Christian Family Center (81 Henderson Hwy.).
The classes take place Saturdays until August 24 and are open to youth aged 12 to 18. Hip-hop classes are from 1 to 2:30 p.m. and contemporary dance classes are from 3 to 4:30 p.m.
Neufeld, who will teach contemporary lessons, has been handing out flyers in the community to let people know about the classes, and she hopes for an encouraging turnout.
"People have shown some interest, so I’m hoping for a good-sized group — 10 to 20 kids, maybe," she said.
"We’re going to focus on contemporary technique, choreography, as well as creative expression," Neufeld said.
After the lessons, there will be a wind-down session where attendees will talk about healthy living and faith.
Neufeld said she’s been an assistant in some RWB classes, but this is the first time she’s taking control of an entire series of sessions, especially while serving the children of the area.
"I’ve taught some kids from our church before and they’ve shown some interest, so I thought why not open it up to them and the entire community?" Neufeld said. "There’s a lot of room for creativity in this area, and there’s a need for keeping children busy, especially during the summer. As an artist, I feel that the arts are a good way to build up self-esteem and self-confidence."
Neufeld said those interested in more information can contact the Christian Family Center by visiting www.mycfc.org or calling the office at 204-667-4029. Advance registration is offered but not required.
