Community comes together for Fun Day
Earlier this month I was pleased to be a community sponsor of the Won’t You Be My Neighbour Family Fun Day. The event was the brainchild of Rory McDonnell and Maria Sanchez.
It started out as a small gathering of close friends, neighbours and co-workers, but quickly mushroomed into a community-wide event. About 500 people came out for a day of family fun, food and refreshments in Bunn’s Creek Park.
Rory and Maria originally planned to pay for everything themselves, but when the event started to get really big, they realized they needed to turn to the community for help, and they sure got it!
I was so proud to be a part of the day and to witness such incredible community spirit. I asked Rory for a list of all the people who made it possible to give our families a day of fun for free.
As a result my column today is going to read more like a shopping list, but I am proud that it is a long list of people with big hearts and tremendous generosity.
It is in this spirit we thank these sponsors and donors: Mountain Bean Coffee Co., Rory at Royal LePage, Brian & Kathy at Here4U, Sun Valley Family Foods, Henderson Animal Hospital, A Buyer’s Choice Home Inspections (Winnipeg North East), Jordon at the Co-operators, Cafe Music School , Public Meat, Cool Encounters Ice Cream Bar, Peter Baumstark Law Office, Domino’s Pizza on Springfield Road, Springfield Meats, Dan at Canstar News -The Herald, Spa Lifestyle & Fashion Boutique, Cutting Edge Automotive Technologies Inc., Balloons Bouquets Plus, Cupcakes by Design, Empress of China, Jeffrey’s Restaurant, Sassy Nailz & Tropical Sun Tan Spa, Body Balance Fitness & Massage, The Marketplace in McIvor Mall, Stephen Druwe at Royal Bank, Kub Bread, Jan at Mary Kay Cosmetics, My Original Rolls, City Councillor Jeff Browaty, WHRA and North Kildonan’s firefighters.
A day of great entertainment was provided by Son’s of Zed, Mr. Ken Music, Kryptonite and 12-21 Band.
Thanks to all the very dedicated volunteers who made it happen. Thank you to Rory and Maria for caring and sharing so much. They are hoping to make this an annual event.
To borrow some words from Rory and Maria, "Remember neighbours, let’s all try to help support each other in continuing to make our community flourish."
If you know someone who is doing good work in our community, I would love to hear from you. Email me at: email@example.com
