Contest seeks to honour good neighbours
The Transcona Hi Neighbour Festival hopes to greet some particularly special neighbours at the 49th annual event.
The festival, slated for May 31, June 1 and June 2, has launched the Hi Neighbour Salutes Good Neighbours Contest in keeping with this year’s theme.
Vice chair Kim Delorme said contest sponsor, Goodfellow and Goodfellow Real Estate, has ponied up $100 prizes for each winner in the Top 10, while winners will also receive a plaque.
Festival chair Ray Ulasy said the criteria for nominations was intentionally left fairly vague. The only requirements for nominees are that they be current residents of Transcona and be available to attend the festival to receive the award.
"We didn’t build a lot of criteria," he said. "It really gives a broad range of what a good neighbour can look like. It can be anything from someone who volunteers their time, maybe donates money, right down to the good neighbour who shovels someone’s driveway.
"It’s really open to (a person’s) interpretation of community people and their expectation of what a good neighbour looks like."
Ulasy hopes the contest will help the festival honour those who contribute to the community, but are sometimes overlooked.
He added nominations must detail specific examples of how the neighbour has been a benefit to the community.
"We hope people are going to nominate some really interesting people," he said. "We know of quite a few organizations who will be nominating people."
Winners’ names will be posted on the festival’s website, Facebook page, and even a parade float.
Nomination forms are available at http://www.transconahineighbourfestival.com/good-neighbour-application.html
Nominations must be in by May 15.
