A new 55-plus complex in North Kildonan will provide more options for seniors.
A ribbon-cutting ceremony with local dignitaries to officially open a new show suite took place at The Edison at 455, located at 455 Edison Ave., last week.
Mayor Sam Katz, River East MLA Bonnie Mitchelson, and Coun. Jeff Browaty (North Kildonan) were all in attendance
The $40-million development will provide 131 new suites, with 65 being built in phase 1, and 66 units in phases 2 and 3. Construction is scheduled to begin later this year.
Debbie Wolfson, community resource coordinator for the River East Council for Seniors, said new developments such as this are needed in the area.
"I get many calls with requests for information on 55 plus housing. There seems to be a shortage," Wolfson said.
Bob Kozminski, president of Mematt Developments ,which is developing the condos, said the show suite will give residents a sense of what to expect once the complex is complete.
"We believed people had to see what would be here before they put their hard-earned money down," said Kozminski, who grew up in the area and attended Miles Macdonell Collegiate.
"We’ve done research and there’s very few condo developments in the area."
Mitchelson said a new development is needed for people who sell their houses but want to remain in the area.
"This is ideal for those in the community who need it. North Kildonan will be better off as a result of this project."
Browaty said that, as a lifelong resident of the area, he’s excited about new developments.
"Growing up, everything was happening in the south. This is very exciting to see. North Kildonan is open for business," Browaty said.
Wolfson said the new complex will be a welcome addition to the area.
"I am excited that they are building something. A lot of people are moving out of houses and into apartments, so there’s definitely a need. But there’s also a need for people with lower incomes as well," she said.
Units in The Edison at 455 will be two- or three-bedroom and will include heated parking, a garden courtyard, private balconies with storage, and recreational spaces. The price of the units start at $274,900.
