What better way to celebrate Canada’s sesquicentennial than to learn about your community?
That’s the idea behind the Transcona Museum’s Amazing Race Transcona.
"Exploring and learning about the community (is the goal)," Alanna Horejda, curator at the Transcona Museum, explained. "Everyone will be spread out, going all around Transcona. It will be fun."

Transcona Museum curator Alanna Horejda (left) and assistant curator Jennifer Maxwell have organized the Amazing Race Transcona. Taking place the morning of July 1, the event will take participants across the Park City in search of historic place, buildings, and monuments.
Taking place on the morning of July 1, Amazing Race Transcona will have teams of two to four competitors zipping around the Park City, looking for historic buildings, structures, and sites. Horejda said that her and assistant curator Jennifer Maxwell came up with concept in an attempt to do something interactive for adults that incorporated the museum’s collection and made good use of social media.
"Amazing Race ideas in other programs are quite popular," Maxwell said. "Some of the people who’ve signed up already said they’ve done other ones, that’s what attracted them."
Teams can pick up their race packages at 8:30 a.m. at the Transcona Museum (141 Regent Ave. W). The race kicks off at 10 a.m. in front of the Transcona Legion (117 Regent Ave. E). Teams will race around to 20 locations across Transcona, posting photos to Twitter (or Facebook or Instagram) as they go.
"It’s going to be timed, there are points associated with every question," Horejda explained. "If you have to use a clue, that’s a time deduction or time penalty. If you have to use all the clues, there are more time penalties."
The race is expected to take two hours to complete, allowing participants to join in the Transcona BIZ’s Canada Day festivities on Regent Avenue. Once Horejda and Maxwell have tabulated the points, the winners will be announced around 2:15 p.m. at Centennial Square. While teams don’t need a vehicle to take part in the fun, having access to wheels will certainly help improve your time.
"It’s going all over Transcona," Horejda said. "From one end to the other."
Racers don’t need to be over 18 to participate, but those under 18 years of age must have parental permission.
"There will be waiver people will sign, saying they’ll obey traffic laws and speed limits," Horejda added. "Be safe, first of all, and have fun."
Cost to enter the race is $40 per team. Teams must register by June 29. Call 204-222-0423 or email info@transconamuseum.mb.ca for more information.
