A North Kildonan apartment complex is receiving a facelift.
Edgewood Estates, which opened on Whellams Lane 37 years ago, is being modernized. Approximately 100 of the complex’s nearly 500 suites have already undergone renovations, while the remaining suites will be worked on as they become available.
Suzan Stupack, leasing manager for Devonshire Properties Inc., said the time was right for the upgrades.
"We had a lot of long-term tenants, and once they have to move for whatever reason, (the suites are) certainly ready for renovation," Stupack said. "The market is calling for it, also."
The improvements will include new flooring and fresh paint. Stupack declined to say how much Devonshire is spending on the renovations.
Stupack said the improvements will make the complex, which she called "North Kildonan’s best-kept secret," more attractive to individuals considering moving in.
She said prospective tenants from within the community are sometimes surprised to discover the buildings, which are located along the Red River.
"They come here because they’re weighing out all their options," Stupack said. "They come here and they go ‘Wow, I didn’t know this was here’."
One Edgewood’s two building offers suites for individuals aged 55 and over, while the other caters primarily to mature professionals. The styles of suite offered vary from one-bedroom to penthouse, with monthly rent ranging from $737 to $979. Each suite has a balcony with either a river or park view.
Stupack lauded the strong sense of community within the building, as volunteers organize programs such as aquasize, ladies exercise, and organic gardening classes.
She said another attraction for prospective tenants is a shuttle service which provides transportation Monday through Friday. In addition, Winnipeg Transit recently extended service to Whellams Lane as part of its No. 85 and No. 90 routes.
"Affordable luxury is what it is," Stupack said.
