Football Hall inducting new members
The Football Manitoba Hall of Fame is set to get a little cozier.
The Hall of Fame announced on July 18 that 15 individuals and four teams are set to be part of the Hall’s fourth round of inductions at a luncheon at Canad Inns Fort Garry on Aug. 8.
The players set to be inducted are former Daniel McIntyre Maroon Cece Luining, former St. Paul’s Crusader and Winnipeg Blue Bomber Roger Hamelin, and former St. James Ram Marshall Quelch.
Coaches to be enshrined are: Arnold "Arni" Taylor of Gordon Bell and Tec Voc, Michael Kachmar of Daniel McIntyre and Sisler, and George Depres, Sr. of the Winnipeg Rods and University of Manitoba Bisons.
Abe Kovnats, Harold "Bud" Irving, and George Eakin will be inducted as officials.
Builders going in are: Joseph Salay, who helped build a football program in Rivers, Man. in 1960, Doug Steeves, who was instrumental in five different high school programs in Brandon from 1956 to 1996, Eddie Cass, who started up the St. Paul’s Crusaders program, former Blue Bomber Kas Vidruk, who worked in the Norwood School Division after his retirement, and Ron Gustafson, who coached at Churchill and Grant Park high schools before serving as Winnipeg High School Football League commissioner from 2000 to 2010.
As well, Winnipeg Free Press journalist Ashley Prest will be inducted in the Special category.
Lastly, teams to be inducted are: the 1954 Canadian Intermediate Football champion Winnipeg Rams, the 1964 MSSAA Provincial Rural High School Football champion Rivers Rams, the 1968 and 1969 Canadian Juvenile Football champion Winnipeg Hawkeyes, and the 1982 Winnipeg High School Football League champion St. Paul’s Crusaders.
Tickets for the luncheon are available from Henryka Ostrow at 204-925-5902 and must be purchased by July 31.
