Funding nearly in place for Sunrise Park renewal
The final domino to Rotary Sunrise Park renewal began to teeter at East Kildonan – Transcona Community Committee on March 19.
The committee approved a $40,000 Community Incentive Grant to help build two new play structures at the park on Shauna Way in Harbour View South. However, the city’s Community Services Department recommended the grant be denied, because the $40,000 would push the City of Winnipeg’s total contribution to over half of the $183,000 cost. Because of this, the grant will need to be approved by city council. Coun. Russ Wyatt (Transcona) said he expects his fellow councillors to give the grant the thumbs-up at the next meeting April 24.
"I think council will be supportive," he said. "They’ve been supportive of situations like this elsewhere in the city."
Geoff and Regan Archambault have played a major role in fundraising, putting up $30,000 of their own money while the Rotary Club of Winnipeg East A.M. is putting up $10,000, the Transcona Playground Renewal Association is contributing $7,000, and the local Neighbourhood Association is putting up $9,000. The rest is slated to come through various funding from the city.
Geoff, now the Rotary Club chapter’s past president, explained the major plan for renewal involves installing two brand-new play structures in the park— one for two-to-five-year-olds and the other for six-to-12-year-olds.
As well, the group hopes to improve drainage at the park, add an asphalt path, and plant new trees. Construction is expected to take place this fall.
"We’re also going to be putting up a bulletin board, so people can put up notices of garage sales, just to try to get the community more involved with everything," he said.
He also hopes to start a sponsor-a-tree program. Those interested in more information can contact Archambault at 204-997-1761.
