Fundraising concert helps raise roofs
A fundraising concert held at a North Kildonan home will help provide shelter to at least three Guatemalan families.
The RiverFest fundraising concert, held at the Kildonan Drive home of Douglas Mennonite Church members Ingrid and Martin Enns on Aug. 29, raised over $23,000, Ingrid said in a voicemail. She noted the cash will help build three, and perhaps even four homes in the Central American nation.
The proceeds will be sent to Luis Carlos Castillo of Nueva Generacion in Antigua, Guatemala, who is affiliated with a contractor to build the homes, which cost approximately $5,000 to $6,000 apiece.
The Enns family heard about the organization through friends of theirs who were working in Guatemala and were moved to do something.
Ingrid said in a follow-up interview approximately 300 people attended the show.
"They all brought their own chairs or blankets. We had the food, and they all found room," Ingrid said. "Our neighbours opened up their backyard for overflow, so it was very nice."
The family invited friends, neighbours, and fellow church members to the show, and didn’t have any doubts about having the show on their property.
"We thought it would be a real neat thing to do in the summer, and we have a big backyard," Ingrid said. "Both the River Rouge and Paddlewheel Queen went by that night. It was magical. It was perfect."
Performers at the family-friendly concert, included Say Uncle! and The WhizBang Shufflers.
Ingrid said event organizers will receive statements outlining how the money has been spent, and noted the contractor with the project employs local Guatemalans. For more information on the organization, visit http://www.asociacionnuevageneracion.org
