Get close to The King
Elvis quilt among prizes up for grabs at fundraiser
Those who have been longing for the warm touch of The King will soon have their chance, as it’s one of the top prizes up for grabs at an upcoming local fundraiser for cancer research.
The upcoming Evening in Honour of Aunt Leslie on Aug. 23, which includes a performance by renowned Elvis Presley tribute performer Daylin James, will feature a nine-patch quilt of the King of the Rock ’n’ Roll among its collection of silent auction prizes.
"Being a (Daylin James) fan club member, I thought it would be kind of neat to make an Elvis quilt," said Judy Prokopchuk, the Transcona resident who made the quilt.
Prokopchuk made the quilt from a patchwork of Elvis-patterned fabric she found at a local store.
Luxton-area resident George Sanderson started the fundraiser in 2009 after his aunt, Leslie Castling, was diagnosed with breast cancer in December 2007. Doctors gave Castling two years to live, but she beat those predictions when she died in February 2011. Close to $11,000 has been raised for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation in conjunction with the Run For The Cure over the last four years.
Prokopchuk has attended for the last two years, and has lost several family members, including her grandmother and aunts, to cancer.
"I myself have diabetes, and I know we have fundraisers for diabetes," she said.
"But I feel with diabetes they’re making progress, and maybe one day with cancer they will too."
The Evening in Honour of Aunt Leslie will take place Fri., Aug. 23 at the Marigold Restaurant on Inkster Boulevard at 6 p.m.
There are about 160 tickets left for the event, Sanderson said.
It includes an all-you-can-eat Chinese buffet and a new show by James, who will slide into his performance at 8 p.m.
Individual tickets are $35, and can be reserved in tables of 10 for $350.
Marigold is located at 1245 Inkster Blvd.
For more information, or to purchase tickets, call Marigold at 204-697-1245, Sanderson at 204-416-6413 or Cecilia Kereliuk at 204-294-4316.
