Great to see work going on at park

  • Print

It is so wonderful to see construction underway at the new Clara Hughes Recreational Park.

I would like to thank the residents of the area for their patience. From what I can see the Clara Hughes site is going to be a fantastic addition to the area which will allow people of all ages to enjoy the playground, the skateboard pad and trails.

The MLA for Elmwood, Jim Malloway, and I are working with the Bronx Park executive to find additional monies for renovating and expanding the existing dressing rooms so that we can have meeting space and a canteen. This will allow the community a convenient and safe place for meetings and activities.  We hope to make a positive announcement very shortly.

With summer finally here, it is a great time to enjoy backyard barbecuing and attending community events.

I have supported a number of events, through my Community Representation Allowance (CRA), to help offset some of the costs of treats and rides for the kids. As I am at the community events, I am always surprised to hear that some residents believe I live in Tuxedo.
I would like to set the record straight and let the people of Elmwood – East Kildonan know that I live right in the ward. I think it is important that a councillor lives in the area they represent so that they can be connected to the issues, and concerns of the people of the area.

I take my job as councillor for the area very seriously and I have been very busy trying to make sure our priorities are voiced at City Hall. I have made sure that the decision makers in the administration do not neglect us and that they give us our fair share.  Area residents should also be aware that the job of a councillor is more than a full-time job, and I have no other job than representing this area to the best of my ability.

I have also been in contact with a number of community groups and organizations about increasing the recreational opportunities in the area. Although the Clara Hughes site is nearing completion and the East Elmwood Community Centre is slated for construction in 2014, there are a number of projects that will likely be heard at the July meeting of East/ Kildonan/Transcona for approval and construction during the summer months.

As we get ready for summer I hope you have a safe and happy holiday and look forward to meeting in the community throughout the summer.
