Great work being done at Movement Centre

Volunteerism is at the heart of community, and there is no doubt in my mind that River East has an abundance of both – volunteerism and community.

Today I would like to spend a moment highlighting The Movement Centre of Manitoba as an example of an overwhelming community success.

The Movement Centre was started up by Margy (Lage) Nelson, born and raised in the North Kildonan community. Margy has a son, Bryce, with cerebral palsy. The Movement Centre is a non-profit charitable organization and, in June 2002, The Movement Centre was gifted their permanent home – at 1646 Henderson Hwy – by Martin and Miriam Bergen. The Movement Centre is located in the Ruth Bergen Memorial Centre building.

The Movement Centre teaches conductive education - a learning system that merges education with therapeutic programming to help clients gain or regain physical mobility, increased confidence and functional independence. The Movement Centre works with children and adults living with cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, stroke, head injury, and Parkinson’s disease.

The Movement Centre receives no government funding. In order to run their programs six days a week, they are forced to charge families attending their programs a subsidized fee, and then must work diligently to raise the remaining funds needed to operate the centre. The Movement Centre requires the continued support of citizens and community volunteers in order to continue to help more Manitobans in need.

What I have learned is that there is a significant waiting list; there is a large demand for services for both children and adults.

I am told that this waiting list will not be addressed until The Movement Centre can expand their programs at their current site; they are at capacity at this point. They are currently working on recruiting a third conductor from Hungary, as well as the support staff that will be required.
On April 19th, The Movement Centre is being honoured with the Concordia Foundation’s 2013 Martin Bergen Award, for their outstanding contribution to society and the community served by Concordia.

I want to thank and congratulate The Movement Centre for all their amazing work over these past 15 years!  Your hard work and dedication help make the quality of life for families better, and for this, I am proud to call myself your representative in the Manitoba Legislative Assembly.

Information on their programs and fundraising events can be found at:  www.movementcentre.ca or by calling 204-489-2679.
