Habitat for Humanity active in our community
Safe, affordable housing is a critical building block of a healthy and vibrant neighbourhood.
Helping people access stable housing, particularly housing that they can own themselves, helps build stronger families and safer communities.
For over 50 years, Habitat for Humanity has helped families in communities around the world realize the dream of affordable home ownership. Habitat houses are sold to low- to moderate-income families who are willing to undertake up to 500 volunteer hours in sweat equity in the construction of their new home.
Homes are then sold at fair market value, but to make the home affordable, Habitat holds the mortgage at zero interest and requires no down payment.
At the end of June, Housing and Community Development Minister Kerri Irvin-Ross announced that the province will support Habitat for Humanity by providing funding of more than $800,000 for the construction of 16 affordable housing units in Winnipeg.
Three of these homes will be in East Elmwood: two units on McCalman Avenue as part of the continued development at the former Sir Samuel Steele School site, and one infill home on Union Avenue.
As the MLA for Concordia, I’ve been privileged to participate in several Habitat builds and key presentation ceremonies in our community. Last year I got to take part in the Habitat build in Memorial Park across from the Legislative building.
The home was constructed in a high-profile location to attract the attention of many Winnipeggers who may be unfamiliar with Habitat’s important work. The home was built for the Van De Keere family and was built "ready-to-move" to the old school site on Nairn and McCalman Avenues. I’m a strong supporter of Habitat’s important work in our community and
I’m proud that our government recognizes the value of investing in affordable housing choices for Manitoba families.
