Jubilee’s Amazing Race teaches lessons
It may not have had the global reach of its television namesake, but the Jubilee Mennonite Church’s Amazing Race sought to make its contestants more worldly.
The race, held May 25, began and ended at the church’s 365 Edelweiss Cres. location, and it took the 17 participating teenagers around the city.
Like the hit reality show, participants had to complete a challenge at each location. Volunteer drivers then shuttled the youngsters to the next location. Organizer Serena Smith said after a relay at the church, the racers then had a scavenger hunt at Sam’s Place coffee shop and bookstore.
Smith explained the scavenger hunt was designed to educate kids about Sam’s Place, "an organization that stands for faith-based social change", by having them seek fair-trade items and books.
After that, participants purchased a bouquet of flowers and then brought them to the Mennonite Central Committee Thrift Store on Chalmers Avenue to give to a volunteer.
"They had tons of volunteers at the thrift store that day and there was lots going on," said Smith. "(Giving the flowers) was a little bit of service that they had to do."
Teams then went to the Scotiabank Stage at The Forks to act out a Bible scene, and they were given the chance to look at nearby amenities like the skate park — which some of them had never seen before.
"A lot of these kids, their parents don’t have cars and they can only get around by bus," she said. "It was good to promote different places in the city."
The day wrapped with a trip to the downtown YMCA for rock-climbing, and then back to the church to plant an apple tree in the yard to help with landscaping. Once the team members recited a short Bible verse they were required to memorize, the race was complete. Winners received $20 Kildonan Place gift cards donated by Coun. Jeff Browaty (North Kildonan).
