Kotyk back as RETSD board chair

  • Print

Peter Kotyk is set to take on a third term as the River East Transcona School Division’s board chair.

The North Kildonan resident, who is taking over from Robert Fraser, previously served in the role during the 2011-12 and 2007-08 school years. The Ward 5 trustee was elected into the position at the board’s inaugural meeting of the year on Sept. 3. Ward 4 trustee Wayne Ritcher was elected into the vice-chair position at the same meeting.

"I want everyone, from the taxpayers to our employee groups, to know that we are open and we are there to listen to their concerns, and hopefully come up with good governance," Kotyk said. "(We want to be sure) to take care of the money bestowed on us to educate the children."

Kotyk said challenges immediately facing the board are implementing the provincial 20K3 strategy, which requires all kindergarten to Grade 3 classes to be capped at 20 students by 2017, as well as to combat bullying in schools.

Kotyk invited local residents to get involved with the division by attending meetings, held on the first and third Tuesdays of the month at the board office at 589 Roch St. at 6:30 p.m. As well, he encouraged locals to check out the arts and athletic activities hosted by local schools.
