The Good Neighbours Active Living Centre is set to mark its 20th anniversary.

The North Kildonan seniors group will hold its annual fundraising dinner at the centre, located at 720 Henderson Hwy., on Mar. 14 at 6:30 p.m. The group provides recreational options, from sports to dance and music to art, for seniors.

Executive director Susan Sader said approximately 260 people, a mix of members and those in the business community, attend the dinner each year.

"This is our biggest fundraiser of the year," said Sader. "We hope this year it will be extra special. It’s amazing how 20 years rolls around."

The evening will feature a video retrospective from the club’s history.

"We have a volunteer who does all the photography for our different events, so this is just something she’s so good at," said Sader. "She knows how to take good pictures and we’re incorporating a lot of those.

"It’s really a look back, so we want to get some pictures from the very early days when we were at the Kildonan Canoe Club and all the different moves we’ve made along the way, all the different people who have come through our doors."

The evening will be emceed by CBC’s Larry Updike, while Elvis Presley impersonator Vic O’Neail, who has previously performed Johnny Cash tunes at the dinner, will perform.

Club president Don King, who came into the role in 2011, has been a member of the group for over a decade. He started out volunteering in the centre’s bookstore, and then joined the fundraising committee, on which he still sits.

King has been glad to see the club grow to its current size of approximately 1,200 members.

"It was very important to establish that we have a seniors centre in this northeast quadrant of the city," said King. "It’s worked out very well over the years, and has meant that our reputation has grown over the years. We’re quite accepted in the community and we have a good name established."

Tickets must be purchased by March 8, and cost $55 (with a $20 tax receipt) and are available by calling the centre at 204-669-1710.

"We’re really looking forward to having a really good turnout on March 14," said King. "We know we have a lot of support over the years from our corporate people and community organizations as well."
