A new North Kildonan-based business is receiving high praise from the community.

Kelmar Country Meats and Deli, located at 7-925 Headmaster Row, held a grand opening on Oct. 13 and public reaction has been positive.

"It’s nice to have a deli in our area that is in walking distance," said North Kildonan resident Michele Quigley. "It will limit our trips to buy meats from larger supermarkets outside our area."

That’s the reason owner Kelly Penner said he chose to open his business in the area. With the small strip mall just opening, he thought it was the perfect opportunity to introduce himself to the tight-knit community.

"This area came open and some good friends that live in the area have been eyeing up this location," Penner said.

"They said a meat shop was needed in the area and so far it’s been well-received."

Penner said he understands the importance of being a part of the community, a lesson he learned as a farmer.

"We farmed just around the Brandon area," he said. "The community is behind us and they want to make this their home meat shop. We’re excited to be here for them."

Customers say it is that friendly atmosphere that has brought them to the new location.

"They service you one-on-one and it’s like a family environment," said Corry Berndsen, who lives in North Kildonan.

"It’s a good touch to have your own butcher, rather than taking a number and standing like (at) bigger chain stores."

While service is always important, the product that is being sold is just as crucial to maintaining long-term relationships with customers, Penner said.

"Most of our meat is local or from the region," he said. "Our pork and chicken is from Manitoba and our beef is from Western Canada of course."

While Kelmar’s is still new to the neighbourhood, customers say they hope it’s around for the foreseeable future.

"It’s great to have a personal butcher that you can work with," Berndsen said. "It’s wonderful to have them here and we will be supporting them."

Penner said he can’t thank the community enough for its support to date.

"It’s been busy since we opened our doors and it shows people want to see what we’ve got," he said.
