Canstar Community News - ONLINE EDITION
One last dispatch before I hit the road for good
After two years of reporting about northeast Winnipeg, this writer is hanging up his pen and notepad.
I’ve had the privilege of writing stories which touched the lives of individuals throughout this great area.
Having the opportunity to hear your stories and write about the things that impact you on a daily basis has been an honour.
As I prepare for a new career, there are a number of stories that stand out in my mind, ones I know touched the hearts and minds of community members.
Whether it was the possible sale of the former Kelvin Community Club site and its eventual redevelopment, concerns over the Chief Peguis Trail extension project, or school kids raising money for a community in Africa, they all mattered.
The passion residents displayed showed me what community is all about.
Even when someone told me they didn’t like one of my stories, the conversation would quickly turn to a story idea they felt would be of interest to readers.
Over the last two years I’ve had the opportunity to meet a number of you who live in the area.
Whether you were someone who called or emailed me every week, or if we only spoke once, I always appreciated hearing from members of the community.
However, this is not necessarily goodbye, but more like see you later.
I grew up in East Kildonan and my wife and I recently bought a house in North Kildonan.
So you will still see me around, whether it’s at the store or a community meeting. The only difference is I won’t be sticking a camera in your face or asking for your comment.
The decision to leave this job wasn’t an easy one, but in the end it was the right one for me and my family.
Regardless of whether I’m the one writing your stories or not, I still spent most of my life in northeast Winnipeg and will raise my family there. The issues which are important to you will be important to me.
Overall this has been a great experience for me. For someone who has written for both daily and weekly papers, I truly believe the best type of news is the community news I was able to bring you every week.
Thank you for trusting me to provide you with the community news that meant was important to you.
