Our senior’s club, Son’s of Ukrainian Pioneers (S.O.U.P.) forwarded a petition with 1,350 Winnipeg residents’ names to the City of Winnipeg Lord Selkirk-West Kildonan Community Committee last July 2012.
The petition read as follows:
To rename the new "Disraeli Bridge Freeway" and the approach from Main Street to the freeway as "Stephen Juba Way."
Presently, the petition is progressing through various city department offices pursuant to the City of Winnipeg By-Law #115/2011.
Our club has notified two businesses by registered mail situated along the present Disraeli Freeway as to our intention and request.
Further, the City of Winnipeg will appoint a "designated committee" where our committee and the two business addresses will have an opportunity to be questioned and to contribute to the deliberations.
City of Winnipeg Council will have the final decision as to the petition’s outcome.
The late Stephen Juba continues to be remembered not only as the longest serving mayor — he leaves behind a legacy of being honest, bold, colourful, visionary and working harmoniously with councils of 50 and 29 members.
