Plessis Road shuts down for underpass construction
Plessis Road shut down between Kernaghan Avenue and Dugald Road on July 28, and will remain that way until December 2014.
The City of Winnipeg issued a statement on July 24 announcing the closure, which will allow for an underpass to be built under the CNR Redditt line. As part of the $77-million project, twin rail lines, the reconstruction and widening of Plessis between Pandora Avenue and Dugald Road, and a shared cycling and pedestrian path between Pandora and Dugald will also be completed.
The city is discouraging motorists from using Bournais Drive by Bernie Wolfe Community School, noting they should instead go west to Lagimodiere Boulevard or east to Ravenhurst Street if they need to cross the tracks. The city also announced it will install temporary traffic-calming measures on Bournais before the 2013-14 school year.
Transcona Coun. Russ Wyatt said measures include a crosswalk raised approximately six inches from the street, which will be installed on Bournais. As well, he noted a traffic table, also raised six inches but covering a length of approximately 22 feet along the street, will be installed. It will be the first ever installed in the city.
"It’s built to ensure it slows vehicles down, but also is not a hindrance to buses and emergency vehicles," Wyatt said. "It allows for both axles to clear it."
With the two installations, combined with a stop sign at Bournais and Rougeau Avenue, Wyatt said the traffic that chooses Bournais as an alternate will not be able to generate much speed in the block near the school.
"They will have to slow down, because if they don’t, (the traffic table will) take the front end of their cars off,"he said.
The closure will affect Winnipeg Transit Routes 49 and 87. Reroute details will be available at www.winnipegtransit.com.
