Winnipeg police are searching for a suspect in connection with a Civic Holiday assault.

Police responded to the report of an assault in the area of Concordia Avenue and Molson Street at approximately 11:15 p.m. on Aug. 5. A 27-year-old male and his 14-year-old male relative were riding their bicycles when they were approached by an unknown male.

According to a release issued by police, the suspect followed them in a vehicle for a short time, after which the suspect got out and attacked the cyclists with a blunt weapon. After fleeing the area and contacting police, the victims were admitted to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

After an investigation, police have issued an arrest warrant for 45-year-old Rodney Patrick Sweeney. Sweeney is Caucasian, 6-2, 230 pounds with short brown hair, blue eyes, and a goatee.

Police say Sweeney should not be approached.
