A Transcona resident is hoping to help treat a variety of ailments from the comfort of one’s own home.
After completing a practicum at Paramount Massage Therapy and passing an exam, Elke Pielahn received her certification from the Reflexology Association of Canada in January, and is offering in-home treatment in the northeast Winnipeg neighbourhoods of Transcona, East Kildonan, North Kildonan, and Elmwood.
Pielahn holds office hours at Paramount Massage Therapy at 113 Marion St. on Monday afternoons from noon to 6:30 p.m. and every second Saturday from 8 a.m. to 1:15 p.m.
She said as a foot reflexologist she can help treat conditions ranging from joint problems and foot pain to digestive problems and insomnia.
Pielahn said reflexology targets reflex points in the feet, hands, and ears, and when pressure is applied to these places, blockages in the body are cleared and the body’s ability to heal itself is kick-started. In particular, she focuses on the feet.
"We can release tension, we can help with stress, and we can help with the circulation," she said. "All-around well-being is promoted.
"You can come for just relaxation, or if you have some issues with your health, we can talk about it."
She decided to offer home visits to make the treatments more accessible to people who may benefit.
"Sometimes people cannot come to me," she said. "Because of sickness or diseases, they are not able to climb on the table.
"Sometimes, people are in wheelchairs and cannot come, but they can benefit from reflexology in one way or another."
Pielahn said during a home visit, it is ideal for the patient to have a recliner chair, though she has a zero-gravity chair she can bring along for the person to use. She also has a mobile massage table she can bring into the home.
She said if the response to her services warrants an expanded schedule, she will offer extra hours.
