Renewal corporation marking one year

Changes on tap alongside celebration

The Chalmers Neighbourhood Renewal Corporation (CNRC) is set to mark a major milestone.

The group will mark its first anniversary with an event on Sept. 18 at the Elmwood East Kildonan Active Living Centre. The event will serve two purposes. First, the organization’s first birthday will be celebrated with dinner and door prizes. Afterward, the CNRC will get down to business with its first annual general meeting.

At the meeting, the CNRC will officially become incorporated and will release its one-year and five-year plans to give residents a sense of its short-term and long-term goals.
Executive director Dale Karasiuk said the organization’s first year was devoted to surveying residents — over 850 of them.

"(Making it to one year) means a lot of good things have happened in the neighbourhood," Karasiuk said. "We’ve had a lot of resident input of where we should go with our plan and our organizational efforts.

"The biggest highlight is to make sure that what we heard from the residents and those that participated is reflected in the neighbourhood plan. We’re quite certain that people will see things that they thought were important reflected in the plan."

Karasiuk said there will be a multimedia aspect to the evening, as the CNRC will debut a six-minute video outlining its goals.

"It’s a nice graphic of everything that’s been happening over the last number of years, so we’re very pleased to put that out," Karasiuk said.

When the organization officially becomes incorporated, Karasiuk hopes to draw members of the group’s advisory board onto the new CNRC board. Another major effect of the incorporation is that it will allow the group to grow and increase its effects in the neighbourhood.

"It allows us to take some additional steps in terms of funding. We have the Neighbourhood Renewal Fund through Neighbourhoods Alive! that will continue," he said. "It’ll also give us an opportunity to explore other areas of grants and support, like housing renewal types of things."

Karasiuk also hopes to help build up the group’s volunteer base to between 40 and 50 residents to help take charge of initiative like active transportation improvement, Beautify Elmwood, or local community gardens.

Karasiuk requested those interested in attending register with him by Sept. 13. Call 204-669-0750 or email chalmersrenewal@mymts.net to do so. He hopes to get 100 to 125 people out to the event. Child-minding will be offered.
