It’s the people in River East that make our community the great neighbourhood we care so much about and call home.
Recently, I’ve been reminded of just how passionate families in River East are. Our community has come together and mobilized as a result of the threat of significantly increased traffic down our residential streets.
A proposal has been made to construct a big box retail development on 37 acres of property in East St. Paul, just inside the north Perimeter at Lagimodiere. Developers plan to use Gateway Road as the only access to this development. No other commercial/big box development in Winnipeg uses a residential street as its main access. North Kildonan residents deserve no less than the same fair treatment other communities receive. We shouldn’t be second-best!
Children, seniors and families use our streets daily and their safety should not be jeopardized by this poorly designed traffic plan. The safety of our children and families must be protected, whether they are participating in activities at Gateway Recreation Centre, using our popular walking trail, walking to school or backing out of their driveway.
Many of you spoke loudly and clearly about the huge traffic problems and serious safety concerns that would be created if this development went ahead as proposed with the primary access being Gateway Road.
My sincere thanks to all of you who voiced your concerns, contacted me and attended meetings in my office. Also thanks to Coun. Jeff Browaty (North Kildonan) for attending and listening. As a result, we have a firm commitment from Coun. Browaty that Gateway Road will not be extended to the city limits and that Raleigh will be closed at the city limits, if necessary.
Until the application is withdrawn by the developer or turned down by the Selkirk & District Planning Area Board, we must continue to voice our concerns. If the development is approved, The City of Winnipeg will have no other option but to ensure Gateway and Raleigh are closed.
I’m so proud to represent such a vibrant and active community where people care about each other and join together to get things done. Let’s work together to keep our neighbourhood safe!
