Myah and Madyson Richard are hoping an upcoming fundraiser will help them to tap their way to Germany.
The sisters, who are students at North Kildonan-based Ken Peter’s Dance Express, will join Team Canada for the 2012 World Tap Dance Championships from Dec. 4 to 8 in the town of Riesa.
The trip is expected to cost their family approximately $10,000. To offset some of those costs, the family is hosting a fundraising social on Sat., Oct. 13 at Rookies Bar in the Central Hotel located at 201 Melrose Ave. E. from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m.
Madyson, who will dance in the junior age category in Germany, will be competing in her third world championship. Myah, who will be taking part in her first worlds, will compete in the children’s category.
While it will be Madyson’s third time at the worlds, the 12-year-old Transcona resident is excited about returning to Germany.
"It’s fun, it’s a really nice country to make friends," said Madyson, adding she would like to perform at Disney World one day.
"All of it is so fun, they have great crepes, and you get to trade items with all of the other countries there."
Parents Dan and Michelle Richard said they’re excited for both of their daughters to have an opportunity to compete internationally.
"We’re really proud, it’s a great opportunity for them," Dan said.
"It’s awesome, I love that they’re dancing at the school I went to, it’s great," added Michelle.
Madyson said she expects the level of competition at this year’s world championship to be higher than in previous years.
"I’m used to the competition, but the dancing level is harder," Madyson said.
Myah, who wants to perform on Broadway one day, said she’s excited about getting an opportunity to meet new people at the event.
"I like it because when we go to the competition I can meet new friends and we can dance together," said Myah, 9.
"I’m looking forward to performing on stage, but I have a few nerves."
Tickets for the social are $10. It is an 18-and-over event.
