Sobeys closing IGA, opening new location

  • Print

Transcona residents who enjoy shopping at Sobeys-owned businesses will soon have a new store.

The company is closing its IGA store at 1783 Plessis Rd. on May 28 in favour of a brand-new Sobeys location at 50 Kildonan Green Dr. across the street. The new store will open its doors on May 31.

Sobeys spokeswoman Keri Scobie said employees at the IGA have been offered jobs at the new location.

She said the time was right to expand the Sobeys brand in Transcona.

"The IGA was a franchise store, and they sold it back to Sobeys corporate," she said.

"When that happens, Sobeys takes it as an opportunity to look at existing locations and decide ‘is this the right format for the community?’ We decided that we would go with the Sobeys format, which has a little more of an extensive offering than the IGA does."

The Sobeys location will offer a full pharmacy, and expanded deli and produce departments. As well, Scobie noted customers will now be able to take part in the Club Sobeys program, which was not offered at IGA.

Scobie also said there will be a grand opening event for the new store, but details are still being worked out.
