Sock hop planned for Murdoch’s 50th

  • Print

Going down to the ol’ sock hop played a big part in Darrell Adams’ youth.

The Murdoch MacKay Collegiate Class of 1972 graduate hopes to bring that enthusiasm back.
Adams, a St. Vital resident, is helping to organize the When We Were Young Soc-Hop at the school on Oct. 5 from 7 to 11:30 p.m. The dance is being held as part of the school’s 50th anniversary celebrations being held that weekend.

"We used to have two or three a year," recalled Adams. "At that time, Winnipeg had a lot of garage bands. That was a lot of fun."

Adams said he expects grads from as far away as British Columbia to attend the evening, which will feature entertainment from live bands playing classic covers throughout the evening. He said the main party will take place in the large Clansmen gym, while the Susan Auch Gym will have tables set up and a canteen where non-alcoholic beverages and snacks will be available for purchase.

The idea for the event came from Elbow, Sask. resident Braden Fast, but Adams soon became the head contact in Winnipeg while Fast did what he could from a province away.

"We weren’t having a dinner of any sort, so the sock hop came up," Adams said. "When we thought about it, we thought the sock hop would be better than the dinner because more people would get the chance to visit.

"It should be fun. Hopefully it will cover a lot of different eras."

Adams noted the committee is striving to collect yearbooks from each school year to have on display at the event.

Adams added that proceeds from the social will be used to set up a 50th Anniversary Scholarship Fund. He said the organizers are trying to raise as much money as possible for the fund.

"Even those of us who are volunteering are paying, to make sure that’s another almost $300 right into the scholarship fund right there," he said. "We’re hoping we can get close to a couple thousand dollars."

Adams said he anticipates the fund will be able to hand out two or three scholarships to graduates this year.

Tickets are $10 each and can be procured by calling Adams at 204-253-0466. There is a roster of over 15 other sellers across the city that can be contacted.

Other events to mark the anniversary include the Clansmen football game against the River East Kodiaks at 5 p.m. on Oct. 4, and an open house from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Oct. 5 including a rooftop photo, school tours, and a chance to visit the Murdoch Café.
