What do you get if you cross a great night out with a safe journey home?
The answer is the Free Ride program, a partnership between the city and Manitoba Public Insurance, which will offer revellers on New Year’s Eve free transit service home.
City officials say the program applies to all regular and Handi-Transit service starting at 8 p.m. until the end of service. The last buses will leave downtown at around 1:38 a.m.
"The Free Ride program allows Winnipeggers to celebrate safely on New Year’s Eve," Mayor Sam Katz said in a news release, noting the service offers individuals "a free and easy option to get home at the end of the evening, while helping to keep the roads safe by preventing alcohol-related tragedies."
Last year, more than 12,000 people rode the bus for free on New Year’s Eve in Winnipeg, officials say.
Winnipeg Transit runs numerous routes in southeast Winnipeg. For complete bus route and schedule information, visit winnipegtransit.com or call 311.
