The summer work of a city councillor
Although August has been unseasonably cool, I have seen many of my neighbours and residents of Elmwood-East Kildonan making the most of these conditions and pursuing all the activities that our area provides.
I am often asked by residents of the area if a city councillor does any work during the summer. While we may not sit in formal council meetings, there is still a lot of work that goes on throughout the summer months. The summer is the time when I plan and prepare for the fall agenda at council and community committee meetings. As a newly appointed member of the Winnipeg Police Board, I have also been busy poring through reports and becoming more familiar with all aspects of the Winnipeg Police Service and its ongoing efforts to provide quality service and to reduce crime in our neighbourhood and around Winnipeg.
I have received numerous calls and emails from the residents of Elmwood – East Kildonan offering their opinions on the issue of subsidizing condo sales in the city. Besides support and opposition on both sides of the issue, there has also been an interest expressed by some to expand the area where the subsidy is made available, as it may assist in the rehabilitation and renewal of our area. I will take these voices into consideration when the issue comes back before council.
Another area that I have been working with the community on is the issue of traffic safety around our schools. As many of you know I voted in favour of reducing speeds in school zones.
In addition, I have been working with individual schools in our area along with the traffic division, the Winnipeg Parking Authority and the Winnipeg Police Service to implement solutions to keep our children safe as they travel to and from school. As the start of school year is just around the corner, I would like to remind all motorists to slow down and be especially careful around our neighbourhood schools and parks.
I hope that the rest of your summer is safe and enjoyable. I would also encourage you to contact my office if you have any questions or concerns about city services or other community issues.
