Transcona Legion revives car rally
The Transcona Legion’s car rally is making a comeback.
The Royal Canadian Legion Branch #7, located at 117 Regent Ave. E., is holding the scavenger hunt-type event on Sun., May 5 after an absence of approximately a decade.
Organizer Jeanne Rudniski said there was a push to bring the event back, and she responded.
"(There were) maybe 20 cars at the last one, and I’m hoping for more this year," she said, noting it was "time-consuming" to run the event annually.
In the event, participants follow a series of clues taking them to locations across Transcona.
Participants are encouraged to arrive at 1 p.m., and the first car will be sent out around 1:45 p.m., and then in 10-minute intervals thereafter.
"I give you your paper, and it tells you where to go to start," she said. "You read the clues from there.
"It’s not a race. It’s not who finishes first. It’s about answering the questions properly…We tell them if you have any (speeding) tickets, you pay it yourself. We’re not responsible for them.
And you better walk in with a smile on your face, because what’s the point if you don’t?"
Rudniski said she and a partner completed the circuit in about 75 minutes, but they had the advantage of knowing exactly where each clue led.
Participants are split up from their spouses during the rally, something branch secretary and past participant Linda Page said isn’t necessarily a bad thing.
"I didn’t go with my husband— I probably would have killed him if I had," she said. "I had a very good partner. I hadn’t met him before in my life, they just drew partners... I had a really good time."
Registration is $12 per person, and the deadline for entries is April 30. Those interested in signing up can do so in person at the branch. The price includes a dinner of pizza, chicken, coleslaw, potato salad, and dessert. Any remaining proceeds will go to support the branch.
For more information, call the branch at 204-222-9951.
For those inclined to stick around the branch for the entirety of the event, two events are coming up.
A movie night featuring Django Unchained is slated for Fri., May 3 at 7:15 p.m. Admission and popcorn are both free, while hot dogs are $2.50. There will also be three mini meat draws held.
Meanwhile, there will be a Spring Fling dance held on Wed., May 8 featuring country music from the Voyageurs. The show starts at noon and lunch will be served at 12:30 p.m. Tickets are $6 and can be procured at the branch or by calling Colleen at 204-222-9879.
