Vacuum shop move denied
A Nairn Avenue vacuum shop is in limbo.
Nairn Vacuum and Appliance, located at 929 Nairn Ave. at Kent Road, is being forced to vacate from its current setup. Owner Kris Goolcharan hoped to move the business into his brother’s home at 925 Nairn Ave.
However, the East Kildonan – Transcona Community Committee decided at its April 9 meeting to recommend to the Standing Policy Committee on Property and Development that the application be denied.
Goolcharan declined an interview on April 11, but said he hasn’t had the opportunity to consider what might be next for the business.
"There’s nothing to talk about," said Goolcharan, who has been in business nearly 30 years.
Coun. Thomas Steen (East Kildonan) said he took residents’ concerns about higher traffic and lower property values into consideration when denying the application.
He also said since the property would remain commercially rezoned for future businesses if the application were approved, the bigger picture needed to be considered.
"If there’s commercial development on that side of Nairn, it’s got to be a little bigger plan and more thought-out," said Steen, citing an area near the Louise Bridge that has gradually changed from residential to commercial, much to the chagrin of residents.
