Winnipeg residents hoping to be Next Star

  • Print

Two young Winnipeg residents are in the running to be Canada’s next big star.

Grace Johnston and Issy Dahl, both 15, are among the six finalists in the YTV series The Next Star, which is in its fifth season.

Judges Mark Spicoluk, Tara Oram, and Keshia Chante will mentor the six contestants and put them through a series of assignments to see if they can handle the superstar lifestyle.

Johnston and Dahl, along with the other four finalists, will learn how to work with music producers, video directors, and how to present their own songs.

Viewers will vote for a winner during the live finale in September.

The winner of the competition will have their music distributed by Sony Music, receive a $5,000 gift certificate to spend at Sears, and a Epiphone Masterbilt acoustic guitar and other accessories from Gibson.

Dahl, a North Kildonan resident and pop singer, said she’s been singing for as long as she can remember and the experience she has gained by being on the show has been invaluable.

"I think for me it was getting more experience performing and showing people what I could do," said Dahl, who attends Miles Macdonell Collegiate.

"It’s an amazing experience, everything about the show. It’s giving us a taste of what could be for the rest of our lives, it’s a good start showing us what the industry is all about and how to deal with it."

Johnston, who attends Gordon Bell High School, said taking part in the show could open up doors for her in the music industry

"I wanted to try out because I thought it would be a good opportunity to get my name out in the industry," said the North End resident, who sings both pop and rock.

"I thought it would allow everyone to see what I can do."

Both girls say making it to the final six has been a major accomplishment and they already feel like winners.

"To me winning would be really great, but just being part of the top six is the best experience. If I won that would be an awesome bonus," Johnston said.

"Being in the top six it feels like we’ve already won," Dahl added. "No matter who wins, I think we’re all really close. So whoever wins it will feel like I won any ways."
