The Winnipeg Public Library’s 2014 summer reading club is set to begin at the Transcona Public Library.
School-aged children (ages six to 12) are encouraged to fill up their summer with reading. Participants in the club will be asked to keep track of each day they spend time reading and they will then earn a corresponding number of ballots for chance to win great prizes.
Registration officially begins on Mon., June 23 but you can stop by the Transcona Public Library now to get started and receive your free reading activity kit.
A special event will be held between 2 and 3:30 p.m. on Sat., June 28 at the Millennium Library downtown help kick off the summer reading club. Children aged three to 12 are encouraged to join the Story Mob, which will include crafts and taking part in a story reading performance.
For more information and to register, call the Millennium Library (204-986-6488). The same event will also be held en français at the Bibliotheque de Saint Boniface (204-986-6488).
In addition to the summer reading club, the Transcona Public Library will hosts several other programs suitable for children.
For example, magician Ryan Price will be at the Transcona Public Library on Aug. 12 at 2 p.m.
What’s more, Family Literacy Fun Day will be celebrated on Aug. 21 at 2 p.m. For more information and to register, contact the Transcona Public Library at 204-986-3955.
To encourage parents and caregivers, the library’s website says: "reading every day is a fun way to reduce summer learning loss and prepare children to return to school ready to learn.
Visit the library and encourage your child’s discovery of new places, people and ideas in books that are free to borrow."
The summer reading club is put on by the Winnipeg Public Library. Prize draws are held throughout the summer for the club's readers, with prizes provided by the Friends of the Winnipeg Public Library, the Aquatics and Active Living Branch of the City of Winnipeg and the Winnipeg Goldeyes Baseball Club.
