The parking lot was full but it was not over crowded inside the Bronx Park Recreational Centre’s Good Neighbours Active Living Centre, where people were participating in a vast array of activities.
On any given weekday, the centre offers local seniors a true sense of community in a setting that promotes self-development and a genuine involvement with one another.
I found three first-time visitors inside the bright and airy Hobnob’s Café, enjoying a coffee and conversation after their game of badminton.
"We’ve only been here two hours and were really excited to discover more about this place," explained Nancy. "I see there is a book store and a computer lab," she said. "The pamphlet we have is full of interesting things to do."
Carolyn, who was a newspaper carrier for The Herald when she was a kid (and whenthe paper cost five cents — so it’s nice to know some things have gotten cheaper over time), says she is happy to have discovered the facility.
"There is so much going on here and we have the gym to ourselves," she said.
"We are tennis players in the summer but we need somewhere to play indoors during the winter. We were playing badminton at another gym and we had to share the space with a kids program. It was too noisy," she said.
And while the other gym rose its drop-in price to $10, here it is $30 for the whole year of badminton, or $2 for a drop-in."
"I am impressed with the layout," said Diane of the large building with quiet nooks and large windows.
"The centre is obviously not just serving physical needs. It is nice to have a place to walk to, to meet and enjoy coffee together. I am also interested in the computer classes and the bridge club," she said.
"And I hear they organize group trips,’" Carolyn added.
"Trips to casinos!" said Nancy, with a laugh.
Good Neighbours Active Living Centre is located at 720 Henderson Hwy and is open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday to Friday.
