Local entertainer making some full-time magic

When it comes down to happiness in the workplace, local magician Ryan Price can say he truly loves what he does for a living. It’s a profession that came very naturally for the Transcona Collegiate alumnus.

"It really started with my nieces and entertaining them," Price says. "I did simple balloons and magic tricks and it just sparked and went from there."

The magician’s act has since grown to include much more than just magic. He also incorporates playful puppets, extraordinary balloon animals and even some live animals.

Yet, to be a great magician, Price insists it takes more than just having the right props.

"Anyone can have the props if you know where to find them. It’s not about the tricks, either. It’s about connecting with the kids and the audience," he says. "For me, I’m working for the kids. I try to find the joy and entertainment in the simple things…the silly things."

All things silly aside, Price has put in hours of dedication to perfecting his craft.

"The reality is it takes many hours just to prepare for a one-hour show," explains the showman. "It’s like any other field. You have to study to become a doctor or a lawyer. You have to study to become an entertainer. It takes a lot of dedication. It’s not an overnight success. It’s a lot of hard work, money spent and time invested."

It’s because of that work ethic and enthusiasm that Price is now starting to travel out of the province. Word is getting out.

"I’m starting to spread out further and further. In the next few years I envision I’ll be touring all of Western Canada," he says.

It’s proof that magic continues to be relevant.

"It’s different from other forms of entertainment because it’s live," Price says. "You can interact with it. The audience changes every show. They’re a big part of it."

The audience is also a big reason of what makes it all worthwhile for Price.

"It’s not about making money. There’s easier ways to make money," Price says, laughing. "It’s all about the interaction with the kids and my audience. Seeing the smiles…hearing the laughter…the heartfelt responses. It’s what keeps me going."
