I was honoured to be in Sage Creek for their Canada Day Celebration, to usher in this nation’s 150th birthday.
Our country has come a long way since it was established by our founding fathers in 1867. If only they could have imagined what a prosperous nation we would become.
We’re a beautiful country, the second largest by land mass in the world. We’re rich in natural resources, but where our real wealth can be found is in our people — their talent, their diversity and their generosity.
Canada is the best place to live, and that’s not just me saying this, but according to polls around the world, we are the envy of most people; they all want to live here. How lucky are we to be living here, as Canadians.
How lucky are we to be living here in Winnipeg, the geographical centre of North America and the true heart of Canada. Winnipeg is a culturally diverse landscape that appreciates its people, many of whom are immigrants. Actually most of us are; my grandparents came from the Ukraine and worked very hard, as part of the generations that built the foundation of Manitoba, this great province which we call home.
Much has changed over the years; Southdale was born 50 years ago, around the same time as our country’s centennial! Out of it grew Island Lakes, Royalwood, and Sage Creek. It was wonderful celebrating together in beautiful Ron Duhamel Park, right in the heart of Sage Creek, adjacent to the new Sage Creek School, a place where most of the area’s children will be attending starting this fall.
I’m proud to have supported the imitative for this much needed educational institution, and will continue to support it. As you may know, I have always supported better cell service here in Sage Creek. Well, the wait is over as there is finally a new cell tower coming to Sage Creek. This has been a long time coming; thank you to city councillor Matt Allard for his continued diligence with this endeavour.
The future is bright. The next 50 years will be an exciting time for all Canadians, all Manitobans, and all Winnipeggers! I’m looking forward to our future here, as I know it will continue to be the best place to live and raise our families. Thank you again for the privilege of sharing this day with you. I wouldn’t have wanted to be anywhere else.
