Amero to perform at aboriginal showcase

Local singer set to take the stage in New York City

A St. Boniface-based recording artist will be part of an international showcase celebrating aboriginal music.

Don Amero will perform at the APAP 2013 conference in New York City on Sat., Jan 12. The event will showcase roots, folk and pop interpretations of Anishinabe, Mohawk, Inuit and Métis culture as part of the Native America North Showcase at the National Museum of the American Indian.

The former hardwood flooring installer — who released his fourth album Heart On My Sleeve in October — is slated to perform at 2 p.m. Digging Roots from Toronto will follow at 3 p.m. and Elisapie from Montreal will round out the free performances at 4 p.m.

Sara Stasiuk, executive director of Manitoba Music, said the event will help Amero connect with presenters from around the world, support the museum and "make a big splash in New York City."

"First Nation, Inuit and Métis artists are releasing a lot of really great music in Canada and we’re excited to be working with the Canada Council for the Arts on a project that helps them access new markets," Stasiuk said in a news release.

The showcase is part of the Aboriginal Music Program’s market development initiatives, which promote Manitoba’s aboriginal talent on the national stage, organizers say.
