Behind every student is a commitment
You know those mornings where you needed to leave the house 10 minutes ago to be on time for work?
You’ve left a sink full of dirty dishes and yet no one has actually eaten a decent breakfast. Your daughters are fighting over your straightening iron (which, incidentally, you haven’t had a turn with in over a year) and you’re not sure how you’re going to get home from work in time to cook dinner before getting everyone to soccer. Or is that just at my house?
Let me reassure you, it all falls into place one magical day in June. As MLA for Southdale, and Minister of Advanced Education I go to a lot of graduations. And at every single one, there is a sea of proud parents watching their son or daughter growing up before their eyes.
Forgotten are the piles of laundry on the bedroom floor, homework only remembered late Sunday night, and all those early morning fights to get the kids out of bed and out the door to school.
Getting our kids from preschool jitters to accepting a degree is a long road and takes investments from family, community and society as a whole.
Fortunately investing in our kids is also investing in our future. From our early childcare curriculum, to our commitment to making smaller classrooms for kids in grades K – 3, to funding our universities, all of these measures add up to our kids being better prepared to succeed.
Our economy is changing, the jobs of today are more knowledge-based than ever before and a post-secondary degree is increasingly becoming the minimum standard for a rewarding career.
And this is why as parents we read to our toddlers, join our local parent council and insist that government invests in education at all levels.
I look forward to all the graduations I will attend this spring – from Grade 6 through to university and college.
Each diploma, degree and certificate represents more than just passing a grade, more than merely moving onto the next level: behind each student is a commitment to helping every child reach their own potential.
