Western Canada’s oldest French-language newspaper is set to hold a public event as part of its 100th anniversary plans.
To celebrate St. Jean Baptiste Day, La Liberté will hold a community celebration on Mon., June 24. All activities are free and open to the public.
To start things off, a pancake breakfast at the Centre culturel franco-manitobain (340 Provencher Blvd.) between 7 a.m. and 10 a.m. will have a musical flavour and include a 100 NONS Songwriters Circle and performances by the École Lacerte Choir and Les Surveillantes Band. According to CCFM, the breakfast will cost $5 for adults and $2 for children.
The pancake breakfast is the annual fundraiser for Envol 91.1 FM (CKXL), which is Manitoba's only French community radio station. The station depends "entirely on grants, donations and advertising," said a spokesperson for the station.
Envol 91.1 FM (CKXL) will be broadcasting live from CCFM during the breakfast, as well during the day's various events between 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.
Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets for the next portion of the event, when proceedings will move to Provencher Park at 10:30 a.m. (rain location is Notre Dame Community Centre) and will feature activities and entertainment for kids, which will include performances by Marie-Claude and Marijo.
There will also be tributes to Cécile Mulaire, founder of Club Bicolo, and Réal Bérard, a.k.a. Cayouche, as well as a mini train, balloons and face painting to keep the kids amused. The MLC Band will also play a set before a 1.30 p.m. procession from the park will lead to Joseph Royal Park, where there will be a press conference to mark the official inauguration of the Sentier La Liberté Trail and the unveiling of a commemorative monument.
The day's events are organized by CCFM, Pluri-Elles, Rivers West, Envol 91.1 FM (CKXL), as well as La Liberté.
Organizers say activities for school and daycare groups, conducted in French, will be available. To RSVP, call 204-233-8972. For more information about 100th anniversary celebrations, visit laliberte100ans.ca
