Dave Wilkins and Flavia Fabio are making a life in wine.
The entrepreneurs recently launched their new wine business, La Vie en Vin, in hopes of making life for Winnipeggers fun with food and wine.
Wilkins and Fabio met this past spring at a wine tasting. Both are self-proclaimed "wine aficionados," and struck up an instant friendship over their common interest.
Wilkins and Fabio both have business backgrounds, as each has their own consulting company. Fabio, who moved to Winnipeg from Argentina last year, is a gourmet chef and trained sommelier, or wine professional, and has been working in the wine industry for 17 years. Wilkins spent many years working as a journalist before starting up his own communications and marketing business.
Together, the two decided they wanted take their work experience and love of wine and turn it into a business.
"We started talking about our dreams and passions, wine, living and enjoying the good things in life," said Fabio, who lives in Fort Rouge.
Shortly after they met, the friends started working on La Vie en Vin.
The wine services business officially launched on Nov. 27 with a reception at Hermanos Restaurant and Wine Bar.
Wilkins said the company has three main components. Wilkins and Fabio work as wine representatives and provide wineries from around the world with marketing and promotion services. They also host events focused on pairings of food and wine, and offer wine tasting presentations and courses.
Wilkins, who lives in River Park South, said La Vie en Vin will custom design wine events for everything from corporate functions to individuals wanting to host a party or wine course in their home.
"There’s not a company in Manitoba that provides the kinds of services that we can provide with all of our experience and background," Wilkins said.
"With (Fabio’s) background, she’s able to produce events that we don’t have here, with a flare and content… that are quite unique."
The partners plan to host themed wine nights which will be open to everyone.
On Jan. 12, La Vie en Vin will host a Wine and Tango Night at the Winnipeg Winter Club. The evening will include a four-course Argentinian meal, with wines paired to go along with the foods. The event will also include a Tango demonstration.
"The decor, the way it’s put together, the food, the whole ambience of it is just upscale. Anyone can attend of course, but it just has richness to it," Wilkins said of the upcoming evening, which starts at 6:45 p.m. and costs $87.
