Former Bisons set to feature in the CFL
New football season will include six former Bisons on four different rosters
With the much-anticipated football season now underway, there will be six former University of Manitoba Bisons on the rosters of four teams in the Canadian Football League in 2013/14.
The list includes local football legend Don Oramasionwu, who was raised in Windsor Park and attended Kelvin High School.
The defensive tackle, 27, who is now in his fifth CFL year, was drafted by the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in the fifth round (39th overall) of the 2008 CFL draft. He attended training camp with the team, but returned to the U of M for his senior year and became a Canada West All-Star. Oramasionwu signed with the Bombers in February 2009 and played for his hometown team for three seasons. He now plays for the Edmonton Eskimos, after being picked up as a free agent.
According to officials, also on the list is Oramasionwu’s Eskimos teammate and defensive lineman Eddie Steele, veteran long snapper/linebacker Cory Huclack of the Saskatchewan Roughriders and safety Teague Sherman, who is in his rookie CFL season with the Bombers.
Rounding out the list is Hamilton Tiger-Cats pair Louie Richardson and Landon Rice. At press time, Richardson, a defensive lineman, was on the injured list, while Rice, an offensive lineman in his rookie CFL campaign in Hamilton, was on the practice roster.
"It is always great to watch former Manitoba Bisons make an impact on several CFL rosters and I’m very happy for Teague and Landon graduating into the professional ranks after very successful careers in Manitoba," said Bison Football head coach Brian Dobie in a news release.
On the coaching side, former Bison staff member Bobby Dyce begins his first season as special teams co-ordinator with the Roughriders. Dyce’s coaching resumé also includes stints with the Bombers. His coaching career began more than 20 years ago with the St. Vital Mustangs in the Canadian Junior Football League.
