Fundraiser to help Winnipeg’s homeless
Advocate hoping for support and donations for annual event
An advocate for Winnipeg’s homeless and less fortunate is hoping the community will support an upcoming event.
Devoted To You Street Ministries will hold its fifth annual fundraising dinner at Bethel Community Church (430 Lakewood Blvd.) on Sat., Feb. 9 at 5 p.m.
The event’s MC will be Bethel’s student ministries pastor Paul Winter, while MP Shelly Glover (Saint Boniface) and pastor Jim Wiseman — whose Walls of Freedom outreach work targets and empowers residents in Winnipeg’s core area — are slated as guest speakers.
Entertainment will be provided by gospel artist Alfred MacLaren, food will be supplied and prepared by Moxie’s and there will also be a silent auction.
"All the money raised will go to help the homeless and less fortunate," said DTYSM founder and director Ron Eldridge, who founded the "faith-based, Christ-centered" organization several years ago after he spent more than 13 years living on the streets.
"We want to help with clothing, food, whatever we can do. Sometimes we’ll try and get them into a hotel on Main Street for the night, especially when it dips below -30 C outside, or provide counselling," he said items such as hats, toques, scarves and sweaters are especially in demand at this time of year.
The ministry’s headquarters recently moved, with Eldridge, from its long-time base in St. Vital to River Heights. But despite the change of address, he hopes individuals across the city will show support by attending the event or donating silent auction prizes. And his reasons for organizing the event are understandably rooted in empathy.
"First of all, I do this because I was there (on the streets), homeless for 13 years," he said.
"There are other great ministries around, like Siloam Mission or the Salvation Army, but we can’t handle everybody. We need to show there are people out there that really care."
For tickets, call Eldridge at 204-880-5182 or Sonny at the church at 204-783-6824.
