A series of upgrades earmarked for the arena at Glenwood Community Centre will turn up the heat for future participants of winter sports programs.
An estimated total of $523,000, funded by three levels of government, will be spent on upgrades to the centre`s existing arena, located at 27 Overton St., which will include sandblast and repair beams, new insulation and cladding, interior wall repairs and painting and new heating and dehumidification systems, it was announced recently.
"The Glenwood Moffat Arena has served the community for almost 40 years," said the centre’s president, Peter Elwick, in a news release. "`Volunteers put in thousands of hours to provide a place where the community can meet. The funding of upgrades to the arena will guarantee another 40 years."
Funding for the upgrades comes from Phase Two of the Building Communities Initiative II agreement between the city and the province, with contributions cost-shared equally at $140,000 each.
A share of the funding was also provided through the federal government`s Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund – $103,226 – and a loan of $140,000 secured by the centre.
The project is expected to be completed by late summer, organizers say. For more information about the centre, visit www.glenwoodcommunitycentre.com.
