Shelly Glover is now Manitoba’s senior MP and regional minister following Stephen Harper’s recent federal cabinet reshuffle.
On July 15, the St. Boniface MP was named Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages for the federal government.
Glover, a former police officer for nearly two decades, replaces former Public Safety Minister Vic Toews, who recently retired from politics, in the senior provincial role. Glover was first elected in 2008.
Also promoted to cabinet was Portage-Lisgar MP Candice Bergen, who was appointed Minister of State (Social Development). The two appointments signal the first time Manitoba has had solely female representation in the federal cabinet.
Moving in the opposite direction, Charleswood-St. James-Assiniboia MP Steven Fletcher was dropped from cabinet last week.
